Is it as bad as flying? Probably not. I do understand that the opponent of UL Monroe is unattractive to them for many reasons as well, and another source of them holding out.

But in the end, when it comes to bowl games, usually the more prestige, the higher the payout. I think that prestige and payout go hand-in-hand when it comes to the bowl game landscape.

La Tech had to travel about 100 miles to the Independence Bowl, not cross country. They held out because of prestige not payout. And in the end they got left at home because the spots started to fill up.

And it seems that they did not want to play U.L. Monroe, an in state school that could have won and poached recurits. Again they worried about the prestige over reality.
